When people hear the word “bodyguard” they usually picture a 6′ 5″ hulked out dude with black shades on and veins popping out of his biceps. The truth is professional bodyguards come in all different shapes and sizes (just not round). Many people in the industry are former military or law enforcement officers who are of average height.
Rather than getting caught up in stereotypes, most bodyguard agencies are looking for professionals that can execute the mission and protect their client.
You need to be in great shape to be a bodyguard, simple as that. No agency or client would ever hire an overweight, out of shape or weak bodyguard to provide personal protection. Strength, stamina, agility and fast defensive reflexes are basic requirements for anyone in this industry.
A lot of former military and L.E. ( law enforcement) professionals get into the executive protection industry and are sometimes shocked at the physical demands if they’ve let themselves go a little bit. A special forces soldier or Navy SEAL won’t break a sweat, but your average police officer or infantryman might be surprised at the pace of an elite bodyguard out in the field.
Some of the best and most sought after professional bodyguards around the world have a tremendous amount of experience in the Law Enforcement or military fields, there can be no doubt about that.
Both the Law Enforcement world and the military world are very strict disciplinarians, they focus on life-saving and stressful situations skills, and they train the men and women that are part of them to take action in the face of danger while protecting those under their charge.
At the same time, it is absolutely not a requirement to have police or military experience to become a professional bodyguard.
